Description
What is Shoulder Replacement ?
Shoulder replacement, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at relieving pain and restoring function in a severely damaged or diseased shoulder joint. This procedure is typically recommended for individuals suffering from conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, or severe fractures that have not responded adequately to non-surgical treatments.
During shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the shoulder joint are removed and replaced with artificial components, similar to those used in hip and knee replacements. These components typically include a metal ball attached to a stem that is inserted into the upper arm bone (humerus), and a plastic socket that is implanted into the shoulder blade (scapula). The artificial components mimic the natural structure and function of the shoulder joint, allowing for smoother movement and reduced pain.
The procedure involves several steps: the damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the shoulder joint, the remaining bone is reshaped to accommodate the prosthetic components, and the artificial implants are securely positioned into place. Shoulder replacement surgery can be performed using traditional open surgery or minimally invasive techniques, with the latter offering potential benefits such as smaller incisions, shorter recovery times, and reduced risk of complications.
patients typically undergo a period of rehabilitation to regain strength, flexibility, and mobility in the shoulder joint. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in this process, helping patients to gradually increase their activity levels and return to their normal daily activities.
While shoulder replacement surgery can significantly improve quality of life for many individuals by relieving pain and restoring function, it is important to discuss the risks, benefits, and expectations with a qualified healthcare provider to determine if it is the right option for each individual’s specific condition.
