Knee Replacement

Description

What is Knee replacement?

Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at relieving pain and restoring function in severely damaged knee joints. This procedure is typically considered when conservative treatments like medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes have failed to provide adequate relief from conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or traumatic injury.
the damaged parts of the knee joint are replaced with artificial components made of metal alloys, high-grade plastics, and polymers. There are two main types of knee replacement surgeries: total knee replacement (TKR) and partial knee replacement (PKR). In a TKR, all three compartments of the knee joint (medial, lateral, and patellofemoral) are replaced, while in a PKR, only the damaged portion of the knee is replaced.
The procedure involves several steps: the damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the surfaces of the knee joint, the remaining bone is prepared to fit the artificial components, and the implants are securely placed into position. The artificial components mimic the shape and function of a healthy knee joint, allowing for smoother movement and reduced pain.
patients undergo a period of rehabilitation to regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the knee. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in this process, helping patients to gradually increase their activity levels and return to their normal daily activities.
knee replacement surgery can significantly improve quality of life for many individuals suffering from severe knee pain and disability, it is important to discuss the risks, benefits, and expectations with a qualified healthcare provider to determine if it is the right option for each individual’s specific condition.
